Academics are at the heart of our school district’s mission. I believe that providing high-quality education is one of the most important ways we can serve our students and prepare them for long-term success. I’ve seen the difference that strong academics can make, and I am committed to ensuring that our district continues to prioritize learning at every level.
One area I want to specifically address is math. Through my own academic experience and conversations with peers from other districts, I’ve seen that Ridgefield often limits student potential by not allowing most 8th graders to take Algebra I. This decision prevents many students from reaching Calculus by their senior year, a key course for those planning to pursue competitive college majors in both STEM and the humanities. I believe we are doing our students a disservice by not giving them this opportunity unless they accelerate their math track later on. If elected, I will advocate for students to have access to rigorous coursework so they can challenge themselves and remain competitive with students in other districts.
As a member of the Academic and Career Development Committee on the University of Virginia’s First-Year Council, I understand what it takes to prepare students for success beyond high school. The acceptance rate for my class at UVA was approximately 16.8%, with an out-of-state rate closer to 13%. I know what it takes to be competitive in today’s college admissions landscape.
If elected, I will work to expand the number of Advanced Placement (AP) courses available at Ridgefield Memorial High School. These courses are crucial in helping our most motivated students stand out on college applications, in addition to expanded extracurricular opportunities. At the same time, I recognize that college is not the right path for everyone. I will also fight to expand technical and vocational education offerings so students who want to enter the workforce after graduation have the skills and training they need to succeed.
Extracurricular activities give students the chance to explore their passions and build meaningful experiences outside the classroom. At RMHS, I was a member of DECA, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Student Council, and several other clubs. These opportunities helped shape my interest in business and leadership, and I believe all students should have access to a wide variety of clubs and activities that allow them to do the same. If elected, I will advocate for expanding extracurricular offerings so every student can find something that inspires them.
Our school district may face challenges due to recent cuts in federal education funding, which supports many vital functions. Through my experience interning in the U.S. House of Representatives, I gained firsthand knowledge of the federal appropriations process. If elected, I will use this insight to help the district navigate potential funding disruptions and ensure we maintain the programs and services our students and teachers rely on.
During my junior and senior years at RMHS, I competed on the cross country and golf teams. I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact athletics can have on students’ physical and emotional well-being. Sports help build confidence, discipline, and teamwork, and I will work to ensure that our athletic programs continue to receive the support they need to help students thrive.
